On the series ‘The Fear of Lord is the Beginning of Knowledge”
The project was made as a continuation of the series ‘Orando et laborando’, it can be regarded as a second episode of my interest on the topic and a shift of my approach. After the ‘Orando’ series I didn’t feel my aims fulfilled, as the focus was more on my own imagination, and less on the reality of the school and the people inside. Hence I tried to reach a more documentary way of depicting, without subjective interpretation. I attempted to make a survey about the institutional traditions, and to represent the community with empathy, but without pathos and sacrality. I called this part of the work ’The Fear of Lord is the Beginning of Knowledge” after a colourful classroom decoration cited from the Bible. The videos were taken in this term, when I tended to use a more documentary visual language. In the video ’Holy Communion’ five students play the service of the Holy Communion itself, each of them gives and gets the bread and the chalice during a complicated and continuous move. The situation is staged, the kids try to be very serious, but they can’t help giggling – maybe because of the absurdity of the situation, or perhaps because at this age one is able to laugh at anything, any time. This video can be regarded as a self-criticism of my artistic method – how an artist struggles with the artifical ways of art-making, and how reality revises every effort.
